Installing A Drainage System Step-by-Step Installing A Drainage System Step-by-Step

A drainage system is an excellent way to divert water to a desired area in a lawn or garden.

Materials Needed
•Shovel
•Rocks (large and small)
•Soil
•Drainage Pipes
•Water

Step 1
In the lowest area of the lawn or garden, locate an area that is 3 feet square and approximately 4 feet deep. Place large rocks in the first 3 feet of the area. Cover the large rocks with smaller rocks to a depth of ½ feet deep. Cover the rocks with a 6 inch layer of soil or dirt until level with the surrounding ground.

Step 2

Place sand in a line along the area where want to drain water. Dig the turf approximately 5 inches wide and 15 inches deep along this line and at a slightly angled decline. Set the turf aside.

Pour a small amount of water into the trench to make sure that the water flows downward and reaches the bottom.

Step 3
Place a layer of stones and rocks at the bottom of the trench. Place lightweight plastic flexible piping in this drainage trench. Place additional stones around the pipe so that it will not shift out of place. Place a layer of dirt over the stones and completely cover up the rocks and pipe. Cover the trench with the turf.
