A corner fireplace is also known as a three-sided fireplace. You will not find a three-sided fireplace as a traditional model but instead as an electric fireplace or as a gas fireplace. Installing a three-sided fireplace is actually not that difficult. The hardest part of the project is connecting the gas line to the fireplace. Connecting an electric three-sided fireplace is as simple as plugging it in.
Regardless of which heating method you choose; the three-sided fireplace will create ambiance and style. The article below will show you how to properly install an electric three-sided fireplace. If you would like to install a gas three-sided fireplace, the instructions are the same. You will, however, need someone to locate and install the necessary gas lines.
Step 1 - Measure the Corner
In order to select the right three-sided fireplace, you need to measure the space where you would like to have it placed. Measure the wall from the floor to the height you want the three-sided fireplace. Do the same thing with the length of the wall to where you would like the sides of the fireplace to terminate. Draw lines in pencil to create the guides for installation. Use these measurements to pick out the three-sided fireplace you want to install within your size parameters.
Step 2 - Install the Blocking
If you plan to move the three-sided fireplace at some point in the future, do not attach it directly to the wall. The blocking secures the fireplace and allows for movement when and if you ever decide to move it. Measure the distance from the floor to the top of the guide you drew in Step 1. Cut a 2x4 to the size. Locate the studs in the wall on each side where the three-sided fireplace is going to be placed. Screw the 2x4 into the stud using the line as a guide. Place several screws along the 2x4.
Step 3 - Install the Three Sided Fireplace
Installation of the fireplace is a very simple process. Bring the fireplace inside the home and line it up with the guides you drew. Push it against the wall so that the blocking is inside the three-sided fireplace. Climb inside the fireplace and place a bracket on the blocking and against the fireplace. Attach it to both with screws. Place three brackets down each side. Remove the top of the silicone caulk and then install it in the gun. Apply a line around the edges of the three-sided fireplace. Wet your finger and then smooth out the silicone.
Step 4 - Install the Heating Element
Place the heating element inside the three-sided fireplace. Make sure it is centered. Plug the heating element into the nearest outlet. For a clean look, drill a hole through the side of the fireplace and then feed the cord through the hole.
