Installing aluminum storm doors is a home project that you can do to help keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Why? Because they help keep out unwanted air from the outside. You don’t want to heat or cool the outside, so putting on aluminum storm doors is a great way to cut your home heating and cooling bills.

Step 1 – Preparation

First, safety is always important when you do any sort of home project. Put on your safety glasses and work gloves and then get together the tools and materials for your aluminum door.

Step 2 - Removal of the Old Door

The first thing you have to do is to remove the existing screen door. For this part of the job you will need a screwdriver to unfasten the existing screws in the hinges of the old door. Carefully remove all the screws and start pulling the old door out of the doorway. It’s probably best to do this with some help from someone, so that the door won’t fall on top of you.

Step 3 – Measure the Doorway

It’s very important to know exactly what size of aluminum storm doors that you need.  So, take your measuring tape out and get ready to measure the size of your doorway.  You need to be sure to measure the openings between the sides and from the ledge to the underside part of the molding to have the correct size door. Make sure you measure both the height and the width of the doorway.

Step 4 – Hinge Bar Installation

An important section to get installed correctly is the hinge bar section. If you don’t get this on correctly, the door won’t hang properly and your project will be ruined. First, use the measurements you got when you determined the height of the doorway and then measure the hinge frame to see if it fits. If needed, make adjustments by cutting it with the saw, but be careful not to cut too much off. Proper measurements are crucial at this point. After this is done, lift the hinge assembly into place and make sure it goes past the door by a fraction of an inch for room for the door to move after it is hung. Then, all you have to do is line it up and screw the hinge assembly into the door itself.

Step 5 – Attachment of the Door

Now, you have to lift the aluminum storm door up and put it in your doorway opening. Then, it has to be attached to the doorway.  Once again, for safety, it’s best to have a friend to help so the door won’t fall on top of you. Once both of you have the door  in the proper position, screw it together with the screwdriver. Make sure the mounting frame fits correctly on the hinge frame portion of the door.

The rest of these directions for installing an aluminum storm door are in Part 2.
