Installing Ceiling Insulation Installing Ceiling Insulation

Ceiling insulation is an important part of keeping your home energy efficient. Without insulation, your home will become drafty, cold, and uncomfortable. Installing insulation along your attic ceiling is easy and can be completed in a few hours.

Types of Insulation

The type of ceiling you have will determine what type of insulation you need. The most common type used is a fiberglass batts bundled in rolls that are between 6 and 8 inches.

Cutting the Insulation

Fiberglass insulation can stay on your skin for a long time and can be very itchy and cause rashes. When you are working with insulation, protect yourself by wearing long sleeves, pants, gloves, and a mask. When you cut insulation, you shouldn’t need anything more than a sharp utility knife since the insulation is light and easy to cut.

Measuring

You will need to measure the rafters by length to determine the amount of insulation needed. For each rafter you need one piece of insulation that is the same length. You also want to measure the length between the rafters to ensure you have proper coverage.

That's it! Keep these tips in mind, and you should be well on your way to insulating your attic ceiling without a hitch.
