When it comes to your child’s safety, child proof locks play a huge role. When your child starts walking, they will also start exploring the cabinets and drawers in your house. So, it is very important that all the dangerous items be locked away to prevent little hands from reaching them. You should also lock away your valuables, as children may consider them as their toys. Before installing child proof locks, you must know about the different types of locks available and how they differ in their function. Installation of child proof lock is a task that anyone can do. It does not require any skill at all.

Step 1 – Choosing the Right Lock

There are different types of child proof locks available in the market and different locks are installed differently. Slide locks have a u-shaped plastic ring on which the lock slides. They are great for cabinets to lock the handles together. Interior safety latches are those that can be placed inside the drawers and fridge locks are those that can be glued on to the fridge. If you want to know how slide locks are installed, then go to the next step. If you are looking for instructions on how to install an interior safety latch, see steps 5 and 6, and if it is fridge locks that you are interested in, go to step 7.

Step 2 – Open the Slide Lock

The locking mechanism of the slide lock is located on the u-shaped ring. It is rectangular in shape and you can see the opening buttons on either side of the lock. Press on both the buttons simultaneously and slide it on the plastic ring to open it.

Step 3 – Place the Slide Lock On the Cabinet Door.

Now, you can see that one end of your plastic ring has the lock attached to it and the other end doesn’t. Insert one end of the plastic ring into the cabinet door handle. Usually, this is the end without the lock on it.

Step 4 – Install the Slide Lock

You can insert the free end of the plastic ring into the hole on the lock and slide the lock so that it stays nice and tight. Always remember to keep it tight, as your kids can put their hands in the gap, if it is loose.

Step 5 – Marking the Area

Interior safety latches are usually placed inside the drawer or inside the cabinet. The main advantage is that it cannot be seen from outside, so the drawer will look clean and neat. The first thing you need to do to install this type of child proof lock is mark the area with a pencil.

Step 6 – Installing Interior Safety Latch

Next, using a hammer drill, drill holes to insert the screws. Screw in the latch to the drawer and check if it is working properly.

Step 7 – Installing Fridge Lock

Clean the surface, where you want to stick the lock. Then peel off the backing from both sides and stick the child proof lock on the fridge.
