Installing Metal Roofing Vents Step-by-Step

Metal roofing is a popular option when it comes to choosing new roofing materials. This is most commonly seen in northern areas where roofs can become packed with heavy snow. A home with metal roofing will not have as much snow, or ice build-up during the winter as it will simply slide off.

One of the biggest problems with a metal roof, however, is the way that the metal can heat up a home during the summer. Since the metal absorbs the heat from the sun, it has to radiate it somewhere. This is usually into the attic, and then through the home. Installing metal roofing vents will give the heated air a place to go.

Step 1: Make Vent Choice

There are typically two types of metal roofing vents. First, are the cylindrical vents that are located within the metal panels. The other is a slatted vent that is located on the roof ridge. They are both generally installed in the same way, but this tutorial is for the vents that install on the metal panel.

Step 2: Prepare Installation

Determine where the actual vents will go. You do have the option of placing these vents anywhere on the roof, but they are better when you can install them about three-quarters of the way up the roof. This way as the hot air rises, it will find a way out. Install two, or more on large roofs, and keep in a straight line. Mark the positions with a chalk line.

Step 3: Mark Vent Outline

Using the body of the roofing vent, place it on the chalk line you made previously. Trace around the body of the vent to mark the exact measurement for the hole. Do not mark the lip of the vent as this will make the hole too large.

Step 4: Cut Hole for Vent

For making the cut you will use a skill saw with a metal cutting blade. With the front part of the saw pointed towards the metal, easily cut into the metal until the saw is resting flat. Make sure to stay on the line and cut out the hole for the vent one side at a time.

Step 5: Install Vent

Once the hole is completed, you can then install the roofing vent. Brush a layer of tar around the hole opening. Slide the vent into the hole and make sure it makes good contact with the tar. Wiggle it back and forth a little bit to make sure it makes good contact. Drill the galvanized screws into the vent and the roof to secure it.

Step 6: Seal Vent

After the vent is installed you need to further weatherproof it by sealing the edges with the roofing tar. Brush on a second layer of tar over the edges of the vent overlapping onto the roof. Keep it smooth for a good look. Next, go into the attic and apply another layer of roofing tar to the underside of the vent. This will ensure that an airtight, and weather-tight seal has been made.
