Installing Tile Shower Drains
Tile shower drains are popular for bathrooms as tiles made of ceramic are usually moisture resistant, sturdy and long lasting. Any tiling to be done in the bathroom needs to be chosen with care as there is a high degree of wear and tear in the bathroom and fittings, faucets, tiles, drains and other fixtures need to be installed with care. Choosing to install shower drains at home instead of hiring the services of a professional is a great way to save a lot of money. Contrary to popular belief installing tile shower drains is not a difficult task and only requires patience, some knowledge and basic tools.
Understanding the Working of Tile Shower Drains
The shower pan is installed to direct the water from the shower and push it toward the drain. The water that is to seep into the drain includes the water that is soaked up by the tiling on the floor. Despite claims made by tile manufacturers, no tile is 100% water proof and hence some residual water always makes its way through the shower flow as well. One of the purposes of the shower pan is to amass this excess water and drain out as well. The shower drain can be understood to be arranged into two holes that are made at two separate levels. The layer on the top is at the surface and is easily visible to the eye. The lower layer is submerged into the ground. A waterproof covering is built into the surface of the ground. This catches the water and the drain hole below it collects the water that falls through.
Materials Required to be Able to Install Tile Shower Drains
There are 3 parts that one needs in order to be able to install tile shower drains properly:
- The reversible clamping ring
- The drain base which is the main part
- The adjustable drain barrel to be attached to the top
Other Materials Needed
- Duct tape
- Welding solvent
- Liner membrane
- Silicon caulk
How to Install the Tile Shower Drains
Step 1: Weld the Drain Base to the Pipe
Place the drain base to cover the hole of the drain pipe. Weld the drain base to the pipe using a welding solvent. The drain base and drain pipe should be kept in mind while choosing the solvent.
Step 2: Cover Drain Base
Use the duct tape to layer the opening of the drain base. This will help to prevent any dirt and debris from entering the pipe.
Step 3: Build Layer
Use the mortar to build a layer at an angle. The slope should be constructed from the drain base moving upwards towards the walls of the shower.
Step 4: Fix Membrane on Mortar
This step involves fixing the liner membrane on top of the mortar. The membrane needs to be affixed to the drain base. To seal this layering use the silken caulk to tighten any space between the drain base and the membrane.
Step 5: Tighten Bolts
The clamping ring can now be fixed atop the liner membrane. Once this has been done the final touch to tightening the membrane is to firmly tighten the bolts in place.
