Installing Wood Fence Posts into Set Concrete, Pt. 1 Installing Wood Fence Posts into Set Concrete, Pt. 1
Installing wood fence posts in concrete is generally easier when the concrete has not yet been installed. However, it is possible to install the posts after the concrete has already been set. This process will be a little bit more difficult, but you can get the job done is you have the proper knowledge. Follow the steps below to get started on this project.
Step 1 - Preparing to Drill
To begin, you will need to find a way to get the fence posts down into the concrete. This process will require you to drill into the concrete with a large drill. You need a drill bit that can handle drilling into concrete and that is larger than the fence posts. You need to make a hole that is bigger than the posts so that they can easily slide down into the concrete.
Once you locate a bit that is bigger than your posts, you can put it in the drill and get ready for some hard work. Make sure that the bit is sharp and is in good shape.
Step 2 - Drilling
The process of drilling into concrete can be very difficult. This is especially true if you are trying to drill a very large hole. When you drill down into the concrete, you need to start out slow. Put all of your weight onto the bit and press down hard towards the ground. In most cases, you will slowly start to drill into the concrete and create a hole.
Step 3 - Cleaning Up the Mess
After you break out the concrete, you should spend some time cleaning up the mess. You do not want broken pieces of concrete and dust all over the area.
Step 4 - Mix Up the Cement
Once you are ready to install the fence posts, you will need to pour cement in around them. This will keep the fence posts in place and create a solid base for them to set in. Before you can do this, you need to mix up the cement for the job. In most cases, you will not need a great deal of cement for this project unless you are doing a very large fence. Pour the cement in a standard wheelbarrow. Read the packaging to determine how much water you need to mix with it and add it to the cement. Mix in the water until it is about the same consistency as peanut butter.
At this point, you should be ready to continue to Part 2 of this series to complete this project.
