Is a Desktop Air Conditioner Effective? Is a Desktop Air Conditioner Effective?
For those who do not have the luxury of central air, whether at home or while in the office, a desktop air conditioner may help create a more comfortable living environment under the right circumstances. But these portable units have limitations that should be taken into account before making a purchase.
Room Size and Effectiveness
A desktop air conditioner works by cooling water held in an evaporator tank. As air is pulled through the tank, the air is cooled and released back into the room. In a very small area you may find this will cool the air temperature by a few degrees. Unfortunately, if you have an open office area, or a large room in your home, you won't notice much of a change.
Since these very small units rely on cooling water you may have to wait for up to 30 minutes while the tank cools again between uses and periodically throughout the day.
Humidity and Electronics
Desktop air conditioners should not be used near electronics, such as computers. These desktop units increase the humidity levels, which can damage nearby electronics. Since desktop units aren't adequate for large areas, consider carefully where they will be used before buying. they can just be a waste of money in many cases.
