In order to relight a gas pilot light, you must turn the pilot off. Wait a minute to be certain that the gas fumes have dissipated before continuing. Then turn the gas knob to the "pilot" position and hold it there. This is necessary to produce the gas which is to be ignited. Light the pilot, using a gas lighter, a match, or a barbeque lighter.
For a hard to reach pilot, the barbeque lighter will work best, but a fireplace match or a kitchen match attached to a stick could be used as well. After the pilot is lit, wait a few seconds, and then turn the knob to the "On" position.
