Is Your Prayer Plant in the Right Pot?

If you are looking for an easy-to-grow, beautiful houseplant, consider a prayer plant. These plants are prized for their colorful broad, flat foliage and the way that they appear to raise their leaves in the evening as if praying. Growing a prayer plant is fairly easy and very rewarding. However, you must choose the right pot for your prayer plant to give it the best possible start.

Potting Considerations for Prayer Plants

Consider the maturity and size of your prayer plant or seedling. If you're purchasing a plant from a nursery, you will probably find them in 2 to 3-inch plastic containers.

A pot size of 2 to 4-inches is appropriate for most prayer plants. If the prayer plant outgrows a smaller pot, you should increase the size of the pot by no more than 1 or 2 inches.

Using a pot size too big may result in the prayer plant using all the moisture and nutrients from the soil and actually cause the plant to die faster. On the other hand, using a pot that is smaller than 2 inches or so will cause the prayer plant to die from starvation and a lack of nutrients.
