Keeping Raccoons Out of the Garden Keeping Raccoons Out of the Garden
Raccoons are very cute and innocent looking, but they can be quite nasty when cornered. They are wild animals with sharp claws and teeth that sometimes carry rabies and other parasites. Here are a few tips for getting raccoons out of your garden:
Keep Your Garden Well Lit
Raccoons are nocturnal animals. They don’t like light hence stay away from well-lit areas. So it’s a good idea to keep your garden well lit with various bright colored lights.
Self-Sealing Trash Cans
Buy trashcans with self-sealing lids. That way raccoons will eventually get discouraged from trying to open the lid and go away. Also place something heavy like a brick on the trash can lid at night. Remember if your trash is kept out of reach of raccoons then they won’t come to your property and ruin your garden.
Netting Garden Ponds and Vegetables
Raccoons like water so try to keep all water outlets out of bounds at night. If you have a pond in your garden, put a wire mesh around it so it is inaccessible to raccoons. Try netting those parts of your garden that has vegetables that you want to protect. That way these critters will be unable to enter and do damage.
