Putting together a new kitchen design can be a lot of fun. If you are looking to freshen up your kitchen and complete your room redecoration and renovation on a budget, try following the steps below.

Step 1 - Clean Up and De-Clutter

That's right, it is time to get out the elbow grease and the empty cardboard boxes. Go through your kitchen methodically working top to bottom, then left to right. With a rag and a bucket full of warm soapy water, clean the inside and outside of all your cabinets. Clean the floors and countertops, and remove all items in the cabinets. Place them items in a temporary location or on a table in another room. Go through each item, one by one and throw out any broken pieces. Set aside another pile of items, electronics or kitchen knickknacks that can be sold at a garage sale.

Step 2 - Hold a Garage Sale

Post signs up in your neighborhood for your garage sale.  Sell all your un-necessary kitchen items you collected.  Take the proceeds from the garage sale and use them towards your kitchen design project.

Step 3 - Paint the Cabinets

If your cabinets are wood on the surface, they can easily be painted using a wood paint. If they are plastic, use a plastic type paint. Purchase several cans of spray paint at your local home improvement store.  A semi-gloss works great for this application. Take the faces of the cabinets off and load them on a sheet outdoors.  Spray the cabinet fronts.  Let dry and spray the backs.

Open the drop cloths and lay them out over the counter tops. Cover the openings of the cabinets. Spray your new color on the cabinet trim. Make sure you apply two generous coats. Remove the plastic protection from the cabinets and wipe around the room for any overspray.

Step 4  - Add New Hardware

New cabinet hardware goes a long way towards a new kitchen design. Attach your hardware to the dry cabinets.

Step 5 - Re-Install Cabinets

Re-attach your newly painted cabinets. Use the level to insure proper installation. Test cabinets once installed.

Step 6 - Paint Room

Paint the kitchen a new fun color to match or contrast your cabinets

Step 7 - Add Lighting

Lighting goes a long way in making a kitchen design fresh, fun and new. Add new lighting. Go to your local home improvement store and purchase under counter lighting. Consider battery-operated options that are easy to install. Install the new under counter lighting. Add batteries if necessary and test.

Step 8 - Dress Your Windows

Dress your kitchen windows with a new complementary fabric to your wall paint or to your new cabinet colors. Either create and install stiff window dressings or sew straight panel drapes.

Step 9 - Put Everything Back

Load all your utensils, plates and other kitchen gadgets and materials into the cabinets. Neatly place them in their sports.  Your kitchen design is now completely fresh, new and organized! Enjoy.
