Know Before You Buy: Persian Rug Purchasing Tips Know Before You Buy: Persian Rug Purchasing Tips

Before you buy a Persian rug, there are several things that you will need to be aware of. There are many sellers out there who are peddling fake Persian rugs, so make sure that you are getting the real deal.

1. Not made in the USA

Persian rugs are only made in Iran. If a dealer tells you it is cheaper to purchase an American made Persian rug, don’t buy into it: American made ‘Persian’ rugs are fakes.

2. The real deal

A seller may tell you that the rug is a real hand woven Persian rung, when in fact it is a machine made copy. There are ways to tell, though. Look at the back of the rug: if you can see the design clearly, then it is a real Persian rug. If the design is faint, or you can’t see it all, the rug is machine made.

3. Quality

If the rug you are looking at is, indeed, a real Persian rug you also want to look at the quality so that you will know whether or not you are paying a fair price. If the rug is dry to the touch and the colors are very dull, it is most likely made with dead wool taken from a sheep that has been slaughtered. This will result in a poorer quality rug that won’t last very long.

Also pay attention to the knots per square inch(KPSI). Flip the rug over and, taking a ruler, count the number of knots in an inch then square that number. The higher the KPSI, the more expensive the rug.
