Lathe Boring Operation Techniques
There are a number of ways in which you can use the lathe boring method to get great results for your project. Practice these before you proceed to the lathe boring techniques, as the more you know about the methods of boring, the more likely you are to be able to reproduce these when you are practicing the techniques. Lathe boring is a technique of lathe work where a hole is made in the object being cut, often by using a single blade or cutting tool. The purpose of boring like this is to prevent a great deal of ridging or other problems on the side of the object, and you can make your hole whatever size you like, from very small to large enough to fit your fist through, depending upon the size of the lathe. The practice of boring is not as easy as it looks, as the tool needs to be guided around carefully and held tightly into position. You should be able to use the boring technique methods to create ashtrays, egg cups, and other beginners items before you proceed.
The Boring Bar
The boring bar is perhaps the most important tool in the lathe boring kit. This bar helps to support the blade which is doing the cutting as it moves into the hole. The boring bar can become over extended, and you can tell that this is happening when the tool starts to 'chatter', or move in its place. This can lead to an uneven cut, so you should always be careful about how much you move the bar when you are cutting the hole. In order to prevent the tool from chattering if you have extended the bar, you should try using a slow speed on your spindle, or by making a smaller hole using the tool at first, gradually opening up the cutting area.
Getting an Accurate Cut
For most lathe workers, the worthiness of the bore is reliant upon how accurate the lathe is a a machine. Before you start boring, you should check that all your tools are adequately aligned, and that the lathe is perfectly parallel. If you don't have a parallel cutting tool, then you won't get an even hole, no matter how much effort you put into it. In order to get the best cut from your blade, keep it sharp, and try and ensure that the lathe itself is positioned evenly in an area.
