Lettuce Propagation Methods Lettuce Propagation Methods
Lettuce can have good and bad harvests. Propagation is a method by which the grower is able to produce a better crop. This is achieved through planting and cutting.
Step 1 – Lettuce Seed Propagation
The most popular method is through lettuce seed propagation. This means using the seeds from a particularly good looking crop to plant a new one. The seeds may be harvested from your own crop or from a friend who had a good crop. Beware of those who try to sell you good seed as you do not know if they are telling the truth or not.
Step 2 – Propagation through Cutting
Producing more offshoots and buds in young lettuce plants is another very good way to develop better harvests. Cuttings from old harvests may be used in the beds of new plantings. Cutting will also promote new shoots to develop and the heads to grow at a faster rate.
Step 3 – Follow Good Harvesting Protocol
When harvesting your heads of lettuce, try to make sure your cuts are clean. This will allow the planting to get more than one harvest period. At the end of the harvest, allow at least a few heads to grow beyond a usage period in order to get seed for future crops.
