Function in Lighting Design

Lighting is an important part of every home. While natural daylight seeping in through windows is a welcome and uplifting sight, artificial lighting serves many important purposes too. Here are some things to consider when evaluating the lighting design in your home.

Task Lighting

Task lighting allows you to target light for a specific activity, or task. This includes things like reading, crafting, working a puzzle, or focusing on details at a workbench. Desk lights with swiveling arms work well for this. Some even have a magnifier built in for focused work. Garage work lights come in many forms for this purpose too. Keep in mind outlet availability, wattage, table placement, and size when choosing your task lighting.

General Lighting

Ambient lighting is the high-coverage lighting that illuminates rooms and hallways throughout your home. For this lighting, you can choose the type of bulb that you prefer, such as soft white, daylight, or bright white. Also consider whether you want a chandelier style, drop lights, or recessed lighting.

Layers of Lighting

When deciding on the lighting in your home, consider the projects that you will tackle in that space. Each room will likely serve many functions. So while the general lighting can make a room shine, the task lighting will brighten the desk work in the corner.

Kitchen and Bathroom Lighting

Kitchens and bathrooms are perfect examples of where layers of lighting are needed. Since they are such high-use areas with both general and focused functions, you will want to provide vivid ambient lighting as well as targeted task lighting in areas where you do makeup or chop vegetables.

Since the days of Edison, lighting has changed productivity as well as relaxation. With modern options, you can now create the look you love, incorporate it with the ambiance you desire, and be able to provide brilliantly placed light where you need it.
