At first glance, it may be very hard to tell a handmade Persian rug from one that was made by machine. Luckily there are a few tell tale signs that the rug you are looking at was, indeed, handmade. If you are in the market for a real handmade Persian rug, then knowing how to tell a real one from a fake one will definitely come in handy.
Whether you are shopping on line or in a store, if you see more than one rug with an identical design, then they are not handmade. Handmade Persian rugs, even if the same design is followed, are all one of a kind.
Pattern on Back
If you flip the rug over and can see the pattern clearly, then it is a handmade Persian rug.
If the fringe appears to have been added after the rug was made, then you are looking at a machine made rug. Handmade Persian rugs have fringe that is an integral part of the rug.
Always keep in mind that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Machine made rugs are nowhere near as costly as handmade Persian rugs. So if the rug is cheaply priced, then odds are it was cheaply made by a machine, also.
