A natural insect repellent is superior by far to the chemical derivatives that exist on the commercial market. The various chemical products may work, but their effectiveness is contingent upon constantly applying it to your skin. With essential oils, on the other hand, you are adding a scent to your body and clothes that not only is offensive to stinging insects, but is appealing to you. Lavender, among others, is one of the best oils for repelling insects, and it is also one of the most appealing natural aromas. Rather than smell like chemically lemon, mix up a batch of essential oil-based insect repellent and keep your environment smelling pleasant.

Step 1: Make Lemongrass Insect Repellent

Mix pure lemongrass oil with olive oil and store it in a small bottle. It should be diluted quite a bit, so use a ratio of 20 parts olive to 1 part lemongrass. Simply rub the oil on your skin—not everywhere, just a few places. The scent will be enough to drive insects away.

Step 2: Drive Away Mosquitoes

Mix two tablespoons of olive oil with 1 tablespoon of Aloe Vera gel. To this add 20 drops of lavender essential oil. Mix it thoroughly and put either in a spray bottle or a small container. This mixture, when applied to your skin or clothes, will repel mosquitoes.

Instead of lavender you can use thyme or lemon essential oil for the same effect with a different aroma.

Step 3: Make a Rosemary and Lemongrass or Lemongrass and Eucalyptus Insect Repellent

As in Step 1, make a mixture of olive oil with several drops of pure lemongrass oil. This time, add a few drops of pure rosemary oil to the mix. It will create an aromatic mix with its own characteristics in addition to keeping a wider selection of bugs away. Another possible combination is lemongrass and eucalyptus oils. This will repel stinging insects for several hours and will create a pleasant combination of scents.

Step 4: Repel Stinging Black Flies

In the same way you made the lavender/olive oil mixture, instead of lavender, add either cedar or sassafras essential oil. This concoction is offensive to the stinging black fly.

Essential oils are wonderful all natural products that have many uses. Easing stress, aromatherapy and their antiviral and antibacterial properties are in addition to their ability to repel insects. Instead of using a chemical insect repellent that does not always work, use something natural and effective. Using essential oils as insect repellent is another case of the healing and beneficial properties of Nature’s bounty. Most essential oils require a carrier like olive oil because they can irritate the skin if put on at full strength. They can be used on their own or mixed with other scents to create pleasant-smelling body oils that keep stinging insects at bay.
