A bed wedge is a pillow made of foam with the purpose of helping people to sleep in a semi-upright position which are especially useful for people who suffer from heartburn or acid reflux. Bed wedge support pillows are the best solution for people who need elevation above the waist while sleeping (head or feet) and they are not only comfortable and easy to sleep on but they are also very easy to make.
Step 1 – Cutting the Upholstery Foam
The first thing you will need to do is to cut the foam for the wedge support pillow. Now take the electric knife and cut a 24 by 24 inch square from your upholstery foam. The thickness of the square will be according to your choice and comfort. Remember that the thicker it is, the higher your wedge will be. Try to get an electric knife with safety features (such as a safety trigger) so anyone not familiar with how to use it (such as children or visitors) won't get hurt. If it uses an electric wire and plug, make sure the outlet's safe before using it.
Step 2 – Marking the Wedge
Your next step is to cut out the wedge from the originally square foam you had previously. By taking hold of a ruler and marker, draw a diagonal line from one corner to the other so that you have two triangular shapes on you square. You should do this on both sides of the pillow in a way that the diagonal lines are in the same matching position.
Step 3 – Cutting the Wedge
Once you have done the diagonal markings you can now cut out the wedge. Get your electric knife and start slicing the square from the corner of your diagonal line while always keeping the knife blade level. If the square is too thick for your electric knife to cut through completely, you can use the markings on the other side to cut through the back part of the square. So, keep in mind that if the electric knife isn’t long enough to completely slice through the thickness of the foam you can use the front markings to slice up through half of the thickness and then use the back markings to cut through the other half. That is exactly why you need two matching diagonal lines on the exact same position.
Step 4 – Cutting the Covering
At this point you should have two triangular shapes. Now you will be making the fabric covering for your wedge support pillow. Get the cotton fabric and place it right side facing down on a flat surface. Put the wedge on it and trace the bottom, top, back and two sides of the triangle. Remember to always add an extra 1 inch for seaming purposes all around. Once you have taken down the markings for your covering, you can use the scissors to cut them out.
Step 5 – Making the Covering
At this point you should match your fabric pieces and sew them together, always making sure that you keep the right side of the fabric facing each other. Once you have only one of the sides undone, turn the fabric inside out and push out all the corners in order to aid insertion of the wedge foam.
Step 6 – Finishing Up
By now your covering should be almost complete. Take the wedge you have cut from your upholstery foam and insert it in the covering. Once you have inserted the foam in the covering you can sew up the remaining side. To sew the raw side neatly, you should turn the edges inwards and press together to make somewhat of a seam and sew them together.
This is the easiest method for making you own bed wedge support pillow. Remember that you can always choose the exact height of your support pillow and that the covering should be made out of cotton or flannel for easy washing and for comfort.
