Save money by making your own natural carpet cleaning solution. They work as well as commercially prepared products and are more friendly to the environment.

Ammonia

Ammonia is a natural product that cleans and sanitizes. Test an inconspicuous spot on your carpet before using ammonia to make sure it doesn't cause discoloration. Use ammonia in your carpet cleaning machine in the same proportion as with a commercial cleaner. Keep windows open for ventilation until carpet dries. There is a possibility the ammonia scent may cause urination issues if you have pets, so you may want to try something else with pets in the home.

Vinegar

Vinegar is another natural cleaner and sanitizer. Mix half and half with water in your carpet cleaner and clean as usual. You can make a solution of equal parts vinegar, ammonia, and water if desired. The smell will disappear when the carpet is completely dry.

Commercial Products

Simple Green is a natural cleaner you can use in a carpet cleaning. Use it along with water in place of a commercial cleaner, alone, or in a mixture with ammonia or vinegar.

To cut grease, mix 1/4 cup ammonia, 1/4 cup white vinegar and 3 teaspoons Dawn dishwashing liquid in two gallons of water. Fill machine as need for a naturally clean carpet.
