Washer and dryer covers are a great way to keep your appliances clean and safe from dents and scratches. If you want to make a cover yourself, here are some easy steps to follow.
Step 1 - Decide on the Material
You can either make fabric covers or vinyl covers for your washer and dryer. If you decide on fabric, you should have some very basic sewing skills (sewing straight seams). If you decide on vinyl, you can make a basic cover without sewing, although you can also make a neater one by sewing. You can buy flannel backed vinyl in tablecloth lengths or at the fabric store by the yard.
Step 2 - Measure
Measure the length and width of each side of the washer and dryer. For each cover, you’ll need five rectangles (or squares) of material. On the top piece, if you have more sewing expertise, you should measure for a separate insert to accommodate the control panel. However, if that is too complex for you, a simple flat piece on top will work effectively.
Step 3 - Purchase Fabric
For this type of project, buying sheets may give you a lower cost per yard, but it may not. Make sure you have a width of fabric that is large enough to accommodate either the length or width of the necessary pieces.
Step 4 - Cut and Assemble
Using your measurements, add 1¼ inches to the length and 1¼ inches to the width of each of the sides to accommodate the seam allowance. Cut out the pieces. For a no-sew vinyl, use clear packing tape to neatly attach the edges together. Fold and tape the edges inside for a neat look. For fabric, sew straight seams.
