Making a Steel Pot Rack with Recycled Materials
You can make a steel pot rack for your kitchen using recycled materials that can be obtained from a salvage yard or recycling center in your community. Using recycled material reduces the environmental impact of building your pot rack since it does not require you to use materials that are made from new raw materials that have to be mined and manufactured.
The process of making a steel pot rack involves acquiring a metal rack, a steel frame to attach the rack to, and hooks to hang the pots and pans from. All of these materials can be found by going to a recycling center or salvage yard nearby.
Step 1: Find Recycled Materials
Making your recycled steel pot rack for your kitchen begins by finding the materials for the project. Before driving all over town looking for a steel frame, metal rack and hooks, call the recycling center in your community and ask if they have any of the materials that you need. You may also want to go to various garage and yard sales that may have some of the materials available. A salvage yard may also be a source for the materials needed to build your recycled steel pot rack.
Step 2: Attach Metal Rack to the Steel Frame
You should attach the metal rack to the steel frame. This will provide you with an area to rest the pots and pans that cannot be hung on the hooks. To attach the metal rack to the steel frame, take an old refrigerator rack or grill and cut it to size using the wire cutters. Place it on top of the steel frame. Take a piece of solder and a soldering iron and fasten the metal frame to the top of the metal frame. Run a bead of solder across the front, back and side of the steel frame to make sure that it is fastened securely to the frame.
Step 3: Attach Metal Strips to the Front of Steel Frame
With the rack attached securely to the top of the steel frame, you will need to attach mounting strips to the front of the pot rack in order to mount it to the wall. Drill holes in the ends of the mounting strips and in the front of the recycled steel pot rack. Use screws with wing nuts to fasten the strips to the front of the pot rack. With the strips fastened to the rack you are ready to hang it from the wall.
Step 4: Mount the Pot Rack to the Wall
Bend the strips of steel mounting strips backwards in order to attach them to the wall. Drill a hole into a corresponding wall stud and use a wood screw to attach the pot rack to the wall. Take the recycled hooks that you acquired and place them on different places on the rack. You are now ready to use your recycled steel pot rack.
