A tea light holder can come in handy if you want to create a cozy atmosphere in your living room using tea lights. Generally, tea lights come in shallow metal recipients that are not particularly appealing. Placing the tea lights in a creative holder can improve the appearance of your living room. You can easily make tea light holders yourself using materials you already have at home or even things you would normally throw away. You can use pieces of wood, old jars or cans to make an elegant tea light holder, and you can decorate it using colored paper, old pieces of jewelry or beads.
You Will Need:
- Tall cans
- Can opener
- Permanent marker
- Measuring tape
- Tin snips
- Gems or beads
Step 1 – Clean the Can
Take off the labels and tags from your can. Clean the can thoroughly and wipe it dry.
Step 2 – Remove the Lid
Use a can opener and remove the bottom lid. Use tin snips to cut around the base of the can to remove the part that is thicker. You will need to remove about 1/8 of an inch from the can.
Step 3 – Measure and Mark the Can
Measure the circumference of your can. The can you use should have a circumference of about 8 to 10 inches. Mark points—such as every inch—around the can using the marker. The markings should be about 1/2 inch from one another. Repeat the marking on the other end of the can. Use a ruler to draw lines that join the markings on the upper and the lower part of the can. Make sure the lines you draw are perfectly straight.
Step 4 – Cut the Can
Measure about 2 inches from the top of the can and mark it. Use tin pliers to cut the can following the vertical markings you made in Step 3 and cut until you reach the 2 inch mark from the top of the can. Cut along the lines that you’ve marked in step 3. You will obtain a "ring" that used to be the top of the can and several strips hanging from this ring.
Step 5 – Arrange the Strips
Take two or three strips and curl these outwards in spirals—these strips will be for décor purposes only. From the remaining strips, choose three strips around the ring, which will be the legs of the tea light holder. Bend 1 inch of these legs at 90 degrees outwards, to make sure the legs will bear the entire ensemble.
All of the remaining strips that are not legs or are not bent upwards should be bent inwards, until touching the opposite side of base of the ring, making sure you create a support for the tea light. If these strips are longer than the diameter of the ring, cut them to a suitable size.
Step 6 – Decorate the Tea Light Holder
Decorate your tea light holder by gluing gems or beads on it. Paint the visible parts with acrylic paint. You may apply a solid color or dots, lines and other designs.
