Making Paper Wine Bags for the Holiday Season

Wine bags are simple, elegant ways of gifting a bottle of wine. While fabric wine bags are quite common, you can use paper or cardstock too to make a wine bag. Making your own paper wine bags is a creative and personalized way of giving a simple gift of wine a special touch. The best part is that it is very easy to make a wine bag from cardstock in next to no time. Paper wine bags can be customized to suit any occasion and the holidays are perfect for making wine bags in holiday-themed colors and prints. Choose red and green colors for Christmas, orange and black for Halloween or red, blue and white for the 4th of July. Here is how you can make your own paper wine bags for the holidays and make gifts of wine, personal and unique.

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • 4 pieces of 8.5” x11” cardstock, printed and plain-colored
  • 1 piece of plain or white-colored cardstock
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Double-edged tape
  • Broad ribbon or tape in coordinating colors
  • Wine bottle

Step 1 – Fold the Cardstock

Lay the cardstock horizontally on a flat surface, stand the wine bottle on the bottom edge, in the middle of the cardstock and use a pencil to mark the width of the bottle. Make similar marks on the other 3 pieces of cardstock. Fold the cardstock at the marks with the patterned side on the outside.

Step 2 – Make the Paper Bag

Stand the folded cardstock upright and place the plain colored sheets of cardstock inside the printed one. Align and square up the edges so that the top forms a square. Add a few pieces of double-edged tape inside to make sure that the corners don’t slip up or down. Alternatively, you can also add a few dots of glue to the insides to prevent the corners from slipping.

Step 3 – Add the Base of the Bag

Measure the top or bottom square of the bag and then, cut the single piece of plain- or white-colored cardstock to fit the bottom of the bag. Glue it to the bottom from the outside of the bag. This will form the base of the bag.

Step 4 – Add Ribbons as Handles

Measure and cut two pieces of ribbon in each color. You should have four pieces of ribbon in the two colors. Take one piece of each and glue it to the top edge of the bag’s side, about 1 inch away from the edge. Repeat with the second side. Let it dry completely to ensure that the handles are secure. Place the bottle of wine inside the bag and get ready to gift it in style. However, avoid carrying the bag by the ribbon handles for too long or swinging the bag, since that can cause the ribbons to get unstuck.

Paper wine bags can be personalized to suit any holiday. You can customize the bag further by printing the receiver’s name on the paper or decorating it with photos, pictures or paint. Easy-to-make and great-looking, these wine bags are bound to make an impression wherever you take them.
