Making Your Deck Stairs Non-Slip

Deck stairs can become slick in inclement weather. Even in dry conditions, wooden deck stairs can be slippery. There are a few things you can do to eliminate the possibility of injury on slick stairs.
Step 1 - Rough Up the Surface
One option to help create non-slip surfaces for wood stairs is to add a texture to them. This can be easily be done by mixing a few cups of fine clear sand with a polyurethane sealant. The sand can be found in the paint area of any home improvement store. Applying this mixture will create a slip-free surface without taking away from the finish of the stairs.
Step 2 - Use Non-Slip Treads
If you don't want to paint on a texture you can purchase non slip tread strips that you can use. These will need to be cut to size and installed using a drill and screws to secure it to the step. Some versions of the tread will apply with an adhesive, but if the stairs are in an area that will see a lot of weather, the adhesive will wear down over time.
