It is easy to make your own environmentally friendly bags. Bags made of eco-friendly materials reduce the strain on our environment since you use them in lieu of disposable plastic and paper alternatives. Follow the simple steps below to effectively make your own reusable bags.

Step 1 – Pick the Fabric

When it comes to picking the right material for your bag, think of the usage you want to get out of it. If you are hoping to use it for the long-run, then it’s worth spending some extra money on sturdier fabric rather than using a cheaper material that will fall apart after a single use. Canvas is a good option; it is relatively cheap for the amount of use you will get out of it, and it’s easy to sew, too.

Step 2 – Decide on Dimensions

Ideally, it makes more sense to have a few smaller bags rather than 1 huge one. Smaller bags are more manageable to carry, and they enable to pack like items together. Alternatively, they should also be big enough to fit in the average box of cereal and still have room for more groceries.

Another thing to consider is the length of handles. The ideal bag should not have handles that are too long that the bag reaches the ground when full, and it shouldn't be too short, either.

Step 3 – Sew the Bag

When cutting the material, make sure to measure properly and to allow for over-lock and extra support at the seams. Place the two pieces of cut fabric over each other, and pin round the edges. Now use a sewing machine to sew the two pieces together, leaving one side open; this will be the opening to your bag. Sew some piping around the edges to make the seams sturdier and able to carry more weight. It is advised that you use a sewing machine to make the bag so as to have stronger stitching.

Do the same with strips of material to serve as handles. Do not make them too thin, as when the bag gets heavy, they will cut into your hands. Sew the handles onto the inside of the bag, equally spaced so that it is easier to carry.

Step 4 – Bag It

Turn the bag inside out. If you like, use buttons, paint or permanent marker to personalize your bag and make it your own.

Now you can use your bag each time you go shopping. Just remember that you are helping the environment with your handmade bag that you can use time and time again.
