When surfacing a driveway with concrete driveway pavers, it is important to know the maximum gradient on which you can safely apply this surfacing material. Learn more about the factors which influence the highest safe gradient for concrete driveway pavers below.

Driveway Traffic

If the driveway will only be used for bicycles, motorcycles and walking, the gradient can be up to 18 percent. If cars only will park in the driveway, the maximum gradient can be up to 14 percent. If trucks and cars will park in the driveway, the maximum allowable gradient is 7 percent.

Subsurface

The subsurface composition will influence the highest safe driveway gradient. On clay subsoils, mix sand and gravel into the clay soil, and lay a drainage mat on top, under a layer of sand, before you set the concrete driveway pavers. On a well-drained loamy subsoil, mix with sand and gravel, then smooth out the driveway base.

Surface Water Drainage

A 2 percent crown down the center length of the driveway is necessary for surface water drainage, especially if a gutter pipe will run water directly down the driveway. Build in this slope for your driveway so it will remain stable at the maximum gradient between 7 and 14 percent.
