Mortar and pestles are still used worldwide. The mortar and pestle originally came about in the 15th century when ancient pharmacists used them to make medicine to help heal people. They may no longer be used to mix medicine, however they still have other uses.

Some people still use this technique to grind up food as a part of their “food crafting” techniques.
What a Mortar and Pestle are Composed Of
A mortar and pestle can be composed of many different types of rock. Each mortar and pestle composition is used for a different purpose.
- Marble – Marble is very hard and is good for all around.
- Porcelain – Porcelain is the most resistant to stains and helps contain moisture in the food.
- Stoneware – Also known as ceramic. There are ridges that allow for better grip when mixing.
- Iron – Good for mixing ingredients that are hard. You should also keep it oiled when not in use.
