When you get into doing a motorcycle engine repair that requires the installation or replacement of the rods and bearings, you are dealing with the very functionality of your motor. The rods are pushed down by the piston once the chamber explodes from the air and fuel mixture. The rods then move the crank shaft, which, in turn, provides power to your drive shaft, moving your vehicle forward. You will want to ensure that the rods and bearings are installed properly to prevent a break in this system and potential damage to your motor.
Step 1 - Insert and Oil the Bearings
In the first stage of this type of motorcycle engine repair, you will want to use a good engine lube and modestly rub it into your bearings before inserting them into the rod sleeve. Once they are well lubricated, slip them into place on both ends of your rods coupling, where it attaches to the cam shaft. This cam should also be lightly lubed to help reduce friction and wear while the engine is being used, and help prevent serious mechanical failures from contact.
Step 2 - Place the Rod onto the Cam Shaft
Doing this kind of project will give you a valuable edge when doing any kind of motorcycle engine repair. Place the top end of the rod cuff or sleeve onto its slot on the cam shaft. Once you have it in position, adjust your bearings so that they line up properly underneath it. It is best to do this while you still have the entire chamber open, as it will be hard to reach the securing bolts in some engines and at some angles. Find the angle that works best for the job at hand.
Step 3 - Attach the Bottom Cuff
The next step in this motorcycle engine repair would be to place the bottom of the rods cuff into position. Make sure that the bearings are lined up correctly to prevent damage when you secure the bolts. Once the bottom piece is in place and all the bearings on the top and bottom are correctly aligned, put the securing bolts into place. You want to ensure that all parts you are using were made for your particular model of engine, as wrong parts can cause a series of malfunctions while it is in operation.
Step 4 - Locking the Rods in Place
This motorcycle engine repair is complete once you have all the pieces lubed, aligned, and secured with the bolts. Be sure not to tighten the bolts with so much torque that it snaps threads, and not so little that they can come loose during operation. The rods are pushed very quickly from the force of the pistons that are taking an explosive impact. If they are not installed correctly, when you turn on the engine, it could very well throw a rod and even punch a hole in a piston. The top end of the rod attaches to the piston and will be fed into the firing chamber once completed.
