Oil Boiler vs Electric Boiler Oil Boiler vs Electric Boiler

An oil boiler or oil fired boiler is an appliance that uses oil to heat up water. Boilers are essentially closed containers that heat water that is distributed throughout a building or complex for various purposes. When you are considering the purchase of a boiler, one of the most important choices to make is with regards to the fuel. Oil boilers and electric boilers are sought after for several different reasons, and some of their major differences, pros and cons of each are outlined below.

Pros and Cons of Oil Boilers

Oil boilers are highly efficient appliances that can heat up large amounts of water. Some models are also very environmentally friendly; because you have the option of using recycled oil or bio-diesel as the fuel source. Oil boilers provide very even heating. Though oil burners require a separate room, you have the option of installing some models outdoors. You can also have the maintenance and checks done outdoors. In case of power outages, you can still get your supply of hot water. Oil boilers are widely used in areas that have unreliable electric connections or that do not have natural gas connections.

Oil boilers also have their share of disadvantages. They can be somewhat cumbersome to maintain. You also need a chimney to vent out exhaust gases. As a result, installation of an oil boiler can be quite complicated. They are also quite expensive. You must ensure that you purchase an oil burner that is adequately sized for your needs. You also need a tank to store heated water when the oil burner is in operation.

Pros and Cons of Electric Boilers

Electric boilers are highly advanced and reliable. They require no chimney and there is no complex installation to deal with. There are several types of electric boilers available in various sizes and capacities. You can find one that fits your price range without much difficulty. You also do not have to make a separate accommodation for the boiler, unlike oil versions that require a separate boiler room. Electric boilers are also considered cleaner because there is less condensation and fewer contaminants. Electric boilers are considered much safer than oil boilers.

Electric boilers do not produce any exhaust fumes, which helps you to maintain a cleaner environment indoors. You do not have to make special arrangement for fuel storage, either. Electric boilers are also high on efficiency and may be quicker to provide results, as compared to oil boilers. They do not require much maintenance and are easier to operate too. The electric models are usually much more compact and smaller than the oil boilers.

Though electric boilers are considered cleaner and safer for the environment, they do use electricity that is manufactured by burning non-renewable resources. Many people would argue that this makes them less environmentally friendly options as compared to oil or gas. Also, in regions where electricity is unavailable, an electric boiler is not an option. You can not have hot water if there is a problem with the electric supply. With the cost of electricity on the rise, an electric boiler may not be very cost effective in the long run.
