Organic Crib Mattress vs. Standard Crib Mattress
Many parents have to decide between an organic crib mattress and a standard crib mattress for their baby. When making this decision, there are several factors that you need to take into consideration. Here are a few things that you should know about organic and standard crib mattresses.
Standard Crib Mattress
With a standard crib mattress, you will receive a mattress that is manufactured of man-made materials. Typically, the mattresses will be constructed of polyurethane foam. This will provide you with a soft, yet firm mattress for your baby.
Organic Crib Mattress
With an organic crib mattress, you will be purchasing a mattress that is made of all-natural materials. In most cases, the matters will be made of organic cotton. The feel of this mattress will be comparable to a standard crib mattress, however, you get the added benefit of knowing that it is made of all-natural materials.
One of the most important things to consider about purchasing a standard or organic crib mattress, is the chemicals that are inside the mattresses. A standard crib mattress is made with several different chemicals inside of the material for various different reasons. An organic crib mattress contains no chemicals and only all-natural contents.
The reason that standard crib mattresses contain chemicals is to protect the baby from being injured in a fire. The chemicals present the mattress with flame retardant ability. However, when you examine these chemicals closely, you may find that you do not want your child around them. These chemicals will actually let off gases that will be inhaled while the baby sleeps.
Many standard mattresses will emit chemicals such as arsenic, phosphorus and antimony into the air. These chemicals have been put in mattresses for over 50 years. While the chemicals themselves may not be that dangerous, under certain situations, they can be very dangerous. In many mattresses, a certain fungus has been found growing inside. When this fungus combines with these chemicals, it can emit very dangerous gases.
According to many experts, the gases that are emitted when this fungus combines with the chemicals in the mattress, is because of sudden infant death syndrome. Many parents have experienced the horror that comes with SIDS and many researchers feel that they have located the cause of this terrible condition.
With an organic mattress, this should never be an issue. There are no chemicals in the cotton that can react with anything else to form poisonous gases. Therefore, if you want to effectively eliminate this possibility, purchasing an organic crib mattress is going to be the best solution.
If you are comparing the two mattresses on a cost basis, the standard crib mattress is going to be the least expensive option. Therefore, if you are on a tight budget, this might be the way to go. If you have to purchase a standard crib mattress, you might want to consider wrapping it in order to help prevent poisonous gases from being emitted.
