If you enjoy outdoor camping, you know  how much more enjoyable it is when you're not pestered by bugs. Fortunately, you'll be pleased to learn that there are a number of ways to deter insects that don't involve the use of chemical-laden bug spray.

Spraying Vinegar

One of the easiest ways to keep bugs away during outdoor camping trips is to spray the outside of your tent with vinegar. Many insects find this smell overpowering, which means you won't have to worry about incurring bug bites while you sleep. So, before leaving home, simply fill a couple of empty spray bottles with vinegar and you'll have a natural highly effective insect repellent. When utilizing this method of keeping bugs away, make a point of not spraying too much vinegar if you or anyone you're camping with has a particularly strong sense of smell.

Rubbing Yourself With Onions

If you're not offended by the smell of onions, you can rub a small amount of onion juice onto any exposed areas of your body to deter insects. As is the case with vinegar, many bugs can't stand to be around the smell of onions, making onion juice a fantastic insect repellent. The downside to this particular bug deterrent is that many people can't stand the smell of onions, either, so this method of keeping insects away is not for everyone.

Not Using Scented Products

As many insects are attracted to the smells given off by most perfumes, shampoos, colognes, deodorants and assorted haircare products, you should try to avoid using them during outdoor camping trips. If you insist on engaging in your normal grooming regiment while on a camping trip, make a point of using all natural cleaning and personal hygiene products. These products generally do not give off powerful scents, as they don't have the chemical content of their commercial counterparts.

Taking a Garlic Capsule

Taking a garlic capsule is another great away to avoid insects on outdoor camping trips. This will cause the scent of garlic to be secreted through your pores, which will act as a natural repellent for many insects. Alternatively, you can eat a steady amount of garlic in lieu of taking a capsule, but if you're camping with other people, this may not be a good idea.

Keeping a Clean Campsite

One of the best ways to avoid insects and other potentially dangerous animals while on an outdoor camping trips is to always keep a clean campsite. Take care to properly dispose of garbage, particularly food, immediately. Allowing trash to accumulate will make your campsite very vulnerable to insects, bears and a slew of other uninvited guests.

Staying Hydrated

In addition to being good for your health, staying hydrated can be an effective way to avoid insects, particularly during long hikes and summer camping trips. Because insects tend to be attracted to sweaty, heated skin, make sure to take a sip of cool water whenever you feel yourself beginning to perspire.
