Painting Melamine Cabinets

What You'll Need
Paint rollers
Melamine paint
Painter's tape

Painting melamine cabinets can be a fantastic way to spruce up your home's kitchen. If the task is tackled with the proper tools and a helpful guide, your kitchen can have a sleek new look in no time.

Step 1 - Prep the Cabinets

Begin this step by removing all the dust from the cabinets with a feather duster or a lightly dampened cloth. Next, use a sponge or washcloth to give the cabinets a thorough cleaning with a mixture of mild liquid soap and warm water. Once the cabinets have dried, use a sheet of sandpaper to carefully smooth out any rough patches, then use a damp cloth to clean off the resulting dust, then seal off the area surrounding the cabinets with painter's tape.

Step 2 - Prime the Cabinets

With your melamine cabinets nice and clean, you may now proceed to prime them. Apply primer to the cabinets in broad vertical strokes with the aid of a paintbrush or paint roller. If you'd like to prime and paint your cabinet doors by themselves, remove them with a screwdriver and set them atop an old blanket or a pile or newspapers. After your initial coat of primer has fully dried, apply at least one more.

Step 3 - Paint Your Cabinets

Once your second coat of primer is finished drying, apply your melamine paint in the same fashion as the primer. When painting melamine cabinets, it is recommended that you apply at least 2 coats of paint.
