Painting Metal Shelving

Metal shelving is popular for its strength and robustness. In order to make them more attractive, some people may prefer to paint metal shelves. Here is the method you should use for best results:

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • Water
  • Detergent
  • Bucket
  • Soft cloths
  • Steel wool
  • Paintbrush
  • Metal Primer
  • Paint

Step 1: Cleaning

Start off by cleaning the shelves. This will ensure a neater result when the paint is applied. Simply add some mild detergent to a bucket of warm water. Immerse a soft cloth into the bucket, and then start wiping the metal shelves. If there are any stains make sure to try to remove them. Finally, wipe them dry.

Step 2: Use Steel Wool

Using some steel wool, wipe the metal shelves to prepare their surface for the coating of paint.

Step 3: Dusting

Now, use a soft cloth to wipe the metal shelves one last time to remove any dust particles.

Step 4: Apply the Metal Primer

Now that the metal surface has been prepared well, you can start apply the metal primer. Use a good-quality metal primer and move in even strokes. Allow to dry well before continuing.

Step 5: Paint

Apply a coating of finish-coat paint. It is important that you ensure that the paint you use is compatible with the primer you had applied previously. It is best to apply a second coating of paint, once the first coating has dried up well.
