Pellet Stove Vent Pipe Selection Pellet Stove Vent Pipe Selection

The type of pellet stove vent pipe you use is important for the installation of your pellet stove. The vent pipe is used to carry the exhaust from the stove outside. Select your pipe based on the type of ventilation that will be used for the stove: either horizontal direct ventilation or vertical direct ventilation.

What Is a Pellet Stove?

A pellet stove is a type of free standing fireplace or fireplace insert. As a fireplace insert, the pellet stove can be inserted into an existing fireplace and vented through the chimney. As a free standing fireplace however the pellet stove requires pipes in order to exhaust the carbon monoxide and other material that is created by the fire.

Pellet Stove Using Horizontal Direct Ventilation

A pellet stove that uses a horizontal direct ventilation has a vent pipe attached to the side of the house. The vent pipe runs at a perpendicular to the pellet stove. This type of ventilation system requires a vent that is slanted at a 45 degree angle and runs straight across the stove.

Pellet Stove Using Vertical Direct Ventilation

A pellet stove that uses a vertical direct ventilation has a vent pipe attached through the roof of the house. The vent pipe runs at a parallel to the pellet stove. This type of ventilation system requires a vent that is at a 90 degree angle and runs straight up through the home's roof.

Selecting a Pellet Stove Vent Pipe

Knowing the type of ventilation for the pellet stove will help in the selection of the proper pellet stove vent pipe. There are many different types of pellet stove vent pipes that are available for installation. The different types of vent pipes for your pellet stove are designed to meet the different type of ventilation set up for the pellet stove, be it horizontal or vertical.

Different Types of Pellet Stove Vent Pipes

The pellet stove vent pipe comes in a variety of lengths, sizes and colors. Choosing the right length is based on the amount of pellet stove vent pipe that is needed. A longer vent pipe will be required if the vent needs to be run vertically through the home's roof from a lower level of the home. Conversely a smaller length of pellet stove vent pipe will be required for a horizontal direct ventilation set up.

Color selection is based simply on matching the color of the pellet stove vent pipe with the pellet stove that is being installed. As for other dimensions of the pellet stove vent pipe, building code standards for your community will dictate which type of pellet stove vent pipe should be selected.
