Pond Pumps Explained
Pond pumps are useful devices that can help you manage your pond better. The pump may be installed at the bottom of the pond or outside. It is connected to electrical supply which sustains circulation of water throughout the pond. Some pumps are solar powered. Different pond pumps have different features. However, they mostly circulate, oxygenate and filter the water. This creates a clean and healthy water supply for aquatic life. A good pump helps to achieve a beautiful pond. It also helps to promote the health of your fish and pond vegetation. Below are 3 different types of pumps available on the market and how they work.
Step 1 - Submersible Pumps
These must be installed in the pond, usually in the deepest part. They may be powered by electricity or solar power. Submersible pumps thrust water to the surface of the pond by the action of the pump motor. The motor is usually encased in a resin which makes it safe to use underwater. An impeller churns the water and drives it through an intake pipe. Filters clean the water as it enters the pump. An outlet pipe channels the cleaned water back into the pond. One common problem with submersible pumps is that the pump seal can rupture. This discharges oil coolant into the pond waters, interfering with surface gas exchanges and endangering aquatic life. Submersible pumps are more ideal for smaller ponds with 200 to 1,000 gallons of water. The pumps are amongst the easiest to install and retrieve for maintenance. The pump location underwater makes it a good choice if you prefer a pump that isn’t visible.
Step 2 - External Pumps
The pumps are also known as out of pond pumps because they are installed outside the pond. External pumps work well with a wide variety of biological filters because of the backpressure exerted on the filter by the pump. This enhances pump functionality. Most external pumps incorporate a priming pot and leaf strainer, which improve efficiency. The priming pot helps to control negative suction. External pumps incorporate a skimmer basket that helps in water filtration. The pumps circulate water in the pond at least once an hour. They make a better choice for medium to large sized ponds with more than 1,000 gallons of water. They create a lot of noise but have a high energy efficiency rate.
Step 3 - Magnetic Drive Pumps
The unit contains 2 magnets and impellers. They utilize magnetism to expel water from the pond. Both the impeller and motor have attached magnets. These magnets radiate magnetic fields which cause the impeller to rotate. The rotation creates a force which channels water through the pump and discharges it outside. Magnetic drive pumps do not use coolants, which reduces the risk of water pollution should a component get damaged. They come in different sizes, which makes it easy to find a perfect fit for your pond. Although they cost a lot more than other pump types, they have fewer maintenance requirements. This makes them a cost-effective investment in the long run. Magnetic drive pumps are also considered to be amongst the most energy efficient.
