Radiant Heat vs Furnace Heating

With so many home heating options, it is difficult to know which is better for your home: a radiant heat furnace or normal furnace heating. Radiant heat systems are great for any home. They are cost-effective, simple to maintain, safe for any family and very efficient. Furnace heat is much more expensive, difficult to sustain, not as secure and less sufficient. Here is a comparative analysis of these two common heating systems.

Radiant Heat

Radiant heat is transferred from solar energy into your home. Radiant heat can be emitted through the floor, walls and even through the ceiling. The heat that comes from radiant heat is transferred 100 percent evenly throughout the room so cold or hot spots are not a problem. With radiant heat, you stay equally warm when walking through the room or sitting on the floor.

Furnace Heat

Most household heating systems are founded on a main furnace, usually a heater of a boiler. While the radiant heat system distributes heat evenly, the heat from the furnace system goes up to the ceiling and almost none goes toward the floor. With furnace heat, you may stay warm while you are relaxing on the couch or lying on your bed, but when you walk on the floor, you get cold again. Although there are some advantages to these home systems, they also have many disadvantages.


  • Radiant Heat: Radiant heat systems are very cost-effective. Usually, installation is very inexpensive. Not to mention, your monthly energy bill is significantly reduced.
  • Furnace Heat: These heating systems are very costly. They require a lot electricity and run up your monthly bills. These systems are not eco-friendly or inexpensive to install.


  • Radiant Heat: Radiant heat systems are easy to maintain. They do not require much maintenance or modifications. Because the solar energy does not move the air, dirt and dust do not travel around the system, eliminating dust and allergens circulating throughout the house. There are no yearly filters to be changed with a radiant heat system.
  • Furnace Heat: Furnace heat systems require yearly maintenance. You must clean them; some systems have filters that need to be changed. Furnace systems are not easy to repair and usually require a licensed professional to fix them.


  • Radiant Heat: Because radiant heat does not distribute any dust into the air, these systems are safe for people with allergies. Also, radiant heat systems do not require any high-voltage power; there are no hazardous gases or extremely hot surfaces.
  • Furnace Heat: These types of heat systems are not as safe as radiant heat systems. They transfer dirt and dust into the air, and are not environmental friendly. They also require gases that are hazardous, have high-voltage, and they tend to get hot.


  • Radiant Heat: All radiant heat systems are 100 percent efficient at any capacity. All of the energy that is transferred into your home is distributed evenly into the rooms.
  • Furnace Heat: Furnace heat systems are not as efficient as radiant heat systems. The heat travels through a venting system rather than through heat elements.
