As the seasons go by, your exterior steps may need to be replaced after some time spent in the sun, rain, snow, and ice. Replacing your exterior entry steps is not a large, or difficult, home project. Depending on the materials used, it can be quite inexpensive.
When replacing your steps, you can easily calculate your costs by measuring the dimensions of the steps. If you are replacing the entire system, then calculate the measurements into boardfeet. If you are only replacing the steps themselves, then you calculate their total measurement.
The first thing to consider when replacing exterior entry steps is the materials you need. Generally you will need 2x6 planks and 2x4 posts. However, if your steps are cement then the costs will rise drastically.
For replacing damaged steps only, you can do this with just a few hours of time by following these simple steps.
- Remove damaged steps
- Cut new steps to size
- Install new steps with galvanized screws
- Paint or seal to finish
If you are going to replace the entire front step system then the process is much same, but you will have to build frame first. This is more costly than just replacing the actual steps. The cost will be mostly in lumber, unless the base is concrete.
