While repainting metal garage doors may seem like a no brainer, there are certain things that you need to do to make sure that they are being painted properly.
Prep the Doors
The first thing you will need to do is remove any paint from your metal garage doors. Applying a good paint thinner or stripper and scrubbing it with a metal wire brush should do the trick. Once all the paint is removed you will need to clean the door and let it dry. Then sand the door so that the newly applied paint will stick to the metal surface.
Always Prime Metal Garage Doors
If you just slap on some paint, let it dry and walk away, you’ll find that the paint will soon peel and flake off. Because they're metal you need to prime the doors in order to get the paint to stick. Apply the paint primer evenly to the sanded doors and let dry.
Be Picky About Your Paint
Not all paints are created equal. If you use the wrong paint, your paint job won’t last very long. Your best bet is to use a high quality latex house paint.
