Replacing a Garage Door Lock
A garage door lock is incredibly important for the safety of your car, tools, and home. However, some models of locks are easily picked and broken, or they may be downright antiquated and obsolete, especially if you have just moved into an older home. The best solution to this potential safety hazard is to simply replace the garage door lock itself. Read on to learn how to quickly and easily replace a garage door lock.
Step 1 - Obtain Lock
First, take a trip to your hardware store and select a new lock. Find one with the most secure qualities:
- Pick resistance
- Break resistance
- Weather resistance
- Compatible with your door
- Compatible with your door opener
Step 2 - Remove Old Lock
Close your garage door, and remove your existing garage door lock. Depending on the model you have, you may need to pry it out with a crowbar and hammer, or remove it with a drill.
Step 3 - Install Replacement
Install the new lock according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Use a lock assembly kit to mount the new lock on the inside of the door; you’ll need a helping hand on the other side of the door to help run the lock through to the other side. Attach the bolt and pin with screws.
