Canners are used on the top of ceramic or glass stoves. Flat bottom canners are safe and can be very useful, but they are also relatively rare to find. All ceramic stoves have a sensor that prevents heat from rising above a certain level thus causing the top to break. Consequently, this sensor prevents the burner to maintain an even high temperature, therefore non flat bottom canners cannot be used on the stove. This is why they are not recommended. Most salesmen though will not inform their potential buyers that there is a problem with the non flat bottom canners.

Using Safe Canners for the Stove

Which are the safe canners then? Most stoves come with this sensor so there will still be temperature fluctuations. Even a flat bottom canner filled with water might need more time to get properly heated up; the water might also need additional time to boil. Stainless steel canners are the safest and most efficient canners available today. Using flat bottom canners is recommended by all ceramic or glass stove manufacturers

Canner Characteristics

So, what are the characteristics of a safe canner to use on a ceramic stove? First of all, we already mentioned that the canner should be flat bottomed. It should also be less than an inch wider than the stove burner diameter. In the case it is much wider and larger, they might reflect heat on other parts of the ceramic stove, which are not intended to be that much heated. The top of the stove might suffer problems due to overheating. Cracking and discoloration might occur.

Steam Canners

If you have a glass stove you probably need to avoid certain types of pressure steam canners. It is said that in some cases, steam canners might release suddenly the steam and cause cracks on the surface of the stove. You should always check with the manufacturer and the manual of the stove you have, to see if the model you own can work properly with steam canners. In any case, you should avoid the light pressure canners, because they can release steam easily and damage your stove.

Porcelain Canners

Never use glass or porcelain canners that are not specifically made for glass or ceramic stoves, because there is a great possibility of damaging the surface of your stove. Make sure that the porcelain canners are both heat proof and thick, because they might cause cracks on the stove.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

Additionally there are a couple more things you need to consider when using canners on glass stoves. You should avoid dragging the canner on the stove, because you might damage it permanently, especially when it is filled. In some cases the canner might be too heavy but you have to avoid dragging it as much as possible. In any case, the total weight of the canner and the content should not exceed the 50 pounds.

Check the manual of your ceramic stove and see what type of canners are recommended. Although in general all manufacturers give you more or less the same type of information and suggestions, but you need to be sure that they also apply to your model of stove.
