A push lawn mower typically is a self sharpening device. The cutting action of the blades makes them sharper. However, over time, you may need to sharpen the tool manually. This job is simple and easy to complete.
Step 1 – Inspecting the Lawn Mower
Turn you mower over so that you can inspect the blades for any nicks or other damage. Rub the flat file against the blade to smooth out the edges. Inspect the cutting bar. Turn the mower wheel forward. The mower should make a whirring sound when the blades pass the bar. Make any necessary adjustments to the screws at the end of the bar.
Step 2 – Sharpening the Blades
Use your paint brush to apply a thin layer of the automotive grinding compound to the the blades. Slowly rotate the blades about twelve times by hand. If necessary, apply more compound.
Step 3 – Testing the Blades
Use warm, soapy water to wash the compound from the blades. Rinse the blades with clean water. Dry the blades with a clean cloth. Position a piece of newspaper between the blades and the bar. Rotate the blades in a forward direction. The blades should be able to cut the paper like scissors.
