Should I still winterize my backflow preventer even if I live in a temperate area? Should I still winterize my backflow preventer even if I live in a temperate area?

A backflow preventer is designed to protect the water supply in your house from contamination. Some guides will advise you to winterize your backflow preventer regardless of the temperature of the area where you live. However, if you live in an area that has moderate to high temperatures even during the winter months, then winterizing anything is a pointless, time consuming and financially inefficient idea.

If you are unsure of the winter temperature in your area either because you have just moved or due to other factors, play it safe and winterize your backflow meter. It is both difficult and expensive to get someone out to fix a damaged backflow preventer during the cooler holiday period.
