Slate tile sealant

Having a slate tile backsplash gives an interesting focal point to your kitchen. As it becomes dirty from food splatters and cooking, it can lose its luster. To clean your slate tile, and maintain easy upkeep, follow these 3 easy cleaning tips.

1. Use the Right Tile Cleaner

You will only want to use cleaners that have no acid in them. Special products are made for slate tile, such as Marblelife, which you can find at any home improvement store. Acidic products will cause damage that may lead to the necessary replacement of your tile. If you would like to use a natural method for cleaning, use simple baking soda and warm water on a cotton cloth. This is highly effective in removing any stubborn spots.

2. Clean the Grout

To clean the grout, you can use shaving cream. This is the cheapest and easiest way of cleansing the grout lines around your tiles. You should test an area first to be sure that it will not harm the grout if your grout is colored. Apply the shaving cream onto the grout and rinse thoroughly after letting it sit for about 5 minutes. The grout is porous and you need to allow the shaving cream time to seep into it to loosen the dirt.

3. Benefits of Sealer

After adding the protection of a sealant to your tile, cleaning will be as easy as wiping with a cotton cloth and warm water. Slate tile sealant can be found in the same department as tile cleaner. It is most effective if you apply two coats. Just be sure you allow it to dry between coats.
