Solar Pool Cover Buying Tips Solar Pool Cover Buying Tips
Use a solar pool cover to keep heat from escaping your swimming pool, to prevent excessive water evaporation and to reduce the amount of chemicals you need to keep your pool water balanced. They come in 3 main varieties: bubble solar covers, vinyl covers and insulated covers. There are also liquid solar covers that you can turn to for 24-hour a day heat retention protection.
Tip #1 – Size Matters
Select a pool cover that is the right size for your pool. Most covers come in square or rectangular solar blanket swatches that should closely match the size of your pool. Keep in mind that it is better to buy a cover that is slightly larger than your swimming pool than one that is too small.
Tip #2 – Know Your Options
Before you buy a solar pool cover, research the different types:
- Bubble Solar Cover - This design option looks like a large roll of bubble wrap. Heat is trapped in the bubbles.
- Straight Line Vinyl Cover - This is a sheet of vinyl that floats on the surface of your swimming pool.
- Insulated Vinyl Cover - This design option is made from several layers of vinyl that have pockets of air in between the layers. This helps to prevent the transfer of heat from the pool to the air.
Tip #3 – Consider a Liquid Solar Pool Cover
If you are worried about being able to manage a solar pool cover because of mobility or strength issues, then consider a liquid solar pool cover. This type is a non-toxic liquid chemical that is added to a pool via a floating dispenser. The liquid is safe to swim in and it helps to trap solar energy.
The advantage of this pool cover is that you don’t have to deal with a heavy and cumbersome vinyl pool cover, the heat protection is active 24 hours a day and a single application lasts up to 30 days.
Tip #4 – Pick Up Pool Cover Reels
One of the most inconvenient aspects of having a solar pool cover is having to wrestle with the cover to get it on and off the pool’s surface. Overcome this by purchasing a pool cover reel that sits at the end of your swimming pool. To retract the cover, just hook the end of the cover to the reel and turn the handle. To put the cover back on the swimming pool, pull the free end of the cover to the far end of your pool. A solar pool cover holder can also store your cover when it is not in use.
