Solar wind energy is the combined efforts of both solar energy and wind energy. As the earth warms from the sun in varying locations and times, it causes different portions to fluctuate unevenly in temperature. As hot air rises, which reduces atmospheric pressure at the earth’s surface, cooler air replaces it, resulting in wind.
With increasing popularity, solar wind energy is created through wind turbines, working similar to a fan. The kinetic energy of the wind is converted to electrical power via a grid system.
Storing Solar Wind Energy
There are several options to storing solar wind energy.
- Batteries: Traditional electrochemical batteries are common, but expensive to use and have shorter life spans. Battery storage is continually improving.
- Compressed Air Energy Storage: This is underground storage of high pressure air that can then be turned on and used on demand.
- Flow Batteries: This is a rechargeable battery that works well for grid applications and is great for high powered storage.
- Ultra-Battery: This relatively new storage option combines a super-capacitator and a lead-battery unit. It has the density to power an electric vehicle, and shows great promise to be more efficient and cost effective.
Because wind is unpredictable in nature, it is beneficial to store the energy created for necessary use. While solar wind energy storage is relatively new, the benefits are clearly useful because of the low cost of power.
