Strip and Wax VCT Flooring
VCT flooring is an excellent choice for high traffic areas. This is due to its high resilience and durability. The flooring is available in a wide array of patterns, colors and finishes. This makes it one of the most popular for homeowners who want an attractive, functional and durable floor. It is also a fairly easy type of floor to maintain. You need to sweep or vacuum your floor regularly, to clear dust and fine debris. Once a week, you may want to clean your floor more thoroughly. This can be accomplished with the help of warm, soapy water and a mop. A vital maintenance procedure involves wax application. This helps to give your floor higher protection. Once you notice your floor has lost its shine and has scuffs, it is time to apply wax. However, before you apply wax, you need to strip the previous finish. A guide to help you along is provided below.
Step 1 – Prepare the Stripper
It is a good idea to wear rubber gloves to protect your skin from possible irritation. Follow the instructions provided to prepare the stripper for use. Use a bucket to contain the solution.
Step 2 – Apply Stripper to Floor
Wear rubber boots. These allow you to walk safely once the floor becomes slippery. Saturate the floor with the solution. Spread over the entire floor with a mop. Let the solution work for the recommended time, to strip the previous wax. Take note of areas that begin to dry. Apply more stripper solution to sustain the process.
Step 3 – Use a Buffer
Attach a stripping pad onto a floor buffer. Buff the floor in small sections, to strip the previous wax. Be sure to add stripper solution to areas that appear dry. Use a cotton rag to wipe away splatters that may occur on the wall, doors or baseboards. Remove the pad and attach a new one once you notice the efficacy decline.
Step 4 – Clean the Floor
Use a wet-dry vacuum to clear the loose wax from the floor. Flush the stripper that remains down the toilet. Thoroughly clean the bucket and mop used with warm, soapy water. Rinse with plenty of water to ensure no wax or stripper remains. Place the mop outside to dry completely.
Step 5 – Apply Wax
Fill a bucket with VCT floor wax. Dip a clean mop into the wax. Apply the wax onto the floor in small sections. This allows you to work comfortably and not overstretch. Use smooth strokes that overlap, as you work from side to side. Dip your mop often into the wax so that it remains saturated during application. Allow about 1 hour for the wax to dry completely. It is best to apply 3 coats. However, high traffic areas require up to 6 coats. Once you complete application of each coat, be sure to allow adequate time for it to dry completely.
