Styrofoam Insulation 101

Styrofoam insulation refers to expanded polystyrene or EPS. It can be found in slab and wall form and can be an economical way to prevent heat loss. Styrofoam is a trademark of the Dow Chemical Company, which covers its use in floor, wall, and roof insulation.

Types of Styrofoam Insulation

Styrofoam insulation can come in the form of rigid boards or as beads that are sprayed into an area. The rigid boards that are laid into walls to provide insulation to a home are called blue boards. This is because the boards are, in fact, blue. They are commonly used in the construction industry.

The EPS form that is most common to consumers is the loose, beaded form. This is found in what are referred to as packing peanuts, which are used to fill open space in shipping boxes to protect items in transit. When used in construction, EPS bonds together and forms a good seal that provides excellent insulation for an area.

Uses for Styrofoam Insulation

Styrofoam insulation is a less expensive and economic way to provide insulation to a home. It is extremely flexible and easy to use. Unlike fiberglass insulation, Styrofoam does not require special tools for cutting. In addition, Styrofoam insulation does not retain water, making it ideal for walls and floors and in areas prone to flooding. The mildew and rotting problems encountered by walls with fiberglass insulation does not occur with Styrofoam insulated walls.
