A swamp cooler is a device that cools air by blowing it to water-saturated pads which cause the water in return to evaporate. This produces cooler air that is blown inside a home or office building, while at the same time blows the warmer air outside open windows. Swamp coolers require maintenance, though, and are used mostly in areas that have low humidity.
Advantages of a Swamp Cooler
As mentioned, swamp coolers only use about a third of energy that a conventional air conditioner uses. This is much more affordable that the $2,500 fee you will have to pay if you install a traditional air conditioning system. Swamp coolers need water located at the site of where you will install it to cool the air. Water is non-renewable in some areas of the world, so this device cannot be used simply anywhere. They also produce an excess concentration of salts that can damage the roof of your home. You will need to open windows so that the warm air can be blown out of the room. Keeping your windows open can be a safety hazard. You may have to install an in-house vent on your ceiling to promote proper ventilation. The cooled air produced by swamp coolers can allow dust and other particles to accumulate in your home, triggering allergies. Molds have a tendency to grow on the cooler pads as well. You will need to attend to the device regularly.
The conventional method of installing a swamp cooler is to mount it on the roof of your house; however, experts have suggested that swamp coolers would be better off installed on the ground to ease maintenance chores. This also prevents any unwanted accidents from occurring. The smaller, portable swamp coolers are usually installed near windows of the room. They provide cool air in moderate climates, but may not perform just as well in much hotter temperatures. Portable swamp coolers are also available on wheels, but do not have limited cooling power.
Adjust the window openings of your swamp cooler to adjust the movement of the air. Make sure that the windows or vents in your home are open to provide circulation. They must be open by 1 to 2 square feet. Open the windows in your room in order to regulate the temperature as well as the humidity produced.
